Competition is good.
I guess its good to do this…
Dear family,
This is why I don’t want to go back to school.

So it was just a matter of time for the big guys to start putting out products that uses multi-touch interface. Can’t wait to see more, actually. I was so impressed when I first saw Jeff Han’s presentation and made a note of it. And he is obviously involved in this development.
Microsoft has its version of this interface/technology: Microsoft Surface which is going to be commercially available. The promise of smart surfaces and multi-touch interaction is pretty obvious. But lots to discuss and imagine further.

Here is a great, long, conversation about it between interaction designers.
So I get this email from Snap —which is being used on this site— drawing attention to their blog post. “A few days ago, a programmer contacted Snap about using Snap Shots in a Digg.com mashup. Naturally, we said yes and then did a blogpost because we thought his work was so original and exciting.”
I’m not a big Digg user, but I like what you can do with their content. Visualizing what others are reading can be really interesting, as they’ve done in their labs. This mashup is another great example. You can see the stream of content stacked, gathered in a loop, tiled and in an expose-like model. You can hit play and just watch the Digging as it happens. Pretty cool stuff.

Just downloaded Coda from Panic and will be playing with it some. Looks really nice. Its clean and elegant with obvious features. It took my sites information from Transmit (which is an ftp app) and I was able to get right into editing files and doing work on my server. Obviously it doesn’t have every feature of a full editing application, but its pretty fast. And if it works as smoothly as Transmit, I may not need to use Dreamweaver so much.
Need to give it a little more time before I purchase.
First, I’ve played with the Microsoft Expression suite of applications. They’re very impressive for microsoft. If you have to work with .net, then its great to have some designer tools that allows you to develop concepts on the same platform that the programmers are working on. Having not build anything using these tools, I can’t say if they have any short comings. But a I haven’t seen anything in the tool sets that is break-thru. However, it is great to have options.
I think its impressive enough that SilverLight is going to compete with the flash platform. For coders, it may be even better then flash or ajax platform. Their website(s) are as clear as mud. So I haven’t quite figured out everything yet. But looking at the samples made with it, there are some nice features. And the quality of the video is pretty good even at full screen. The filmstrip preview, for example, is nice touch in the couple of examples I saw. Lets hope things get polished as they roll this out more. The video demos and pitch seems great, but couldn’t really say if its better or worse then other methods for a designer, until I get a chance build something with it. It does seem to be very impressive in terms of performance.
What is in the box?
I’m so intrigued. Which tools are in there? and how many?
