Random things that don't suck!

News Map

Newsmap is an application that visually reflects the constantly changing landscape of the Google News news aggregator. A treemap visualization algorithm helps display the enormous amount of information gathered by the aggregator.”

The size of the headlines and the color palette indicate the popularity and categorization. This is much easier to digest then the news.google page, as long as your goal is to get a quick snapshot of what is going on. It reminds me of the NY Times chart: A Year of Heavy Losses. Same basic layout idea, but in the case of News Map, it is more about the dynamically captured slice of the headlines, rather then the comparison of 2 data set.

Love the ability to switch countries and get a quick localized view of the news of the day!

Marcos Weskamp is the creator of News Map and a whole set of visualizations which can be found on his website: marumushi. There is a tone of experimentation there that is definitely worth checking out.
