Step-by-Step: The Crucible Poster
To get my creative juices flowing, I do some work completely unrelated to the day job. It often helps to work with other creative types because they tend to collaborate better. The following shows the general steps that went into a poster for Keegan Theatre.
Initial Ideas: This is an example of going into a photo shoot with out doing your homework. Kinda had an idea but didn’t really know the look of it yet. So we took more shots then we needed and started with typical layout.
It wasn’t working.
Mood Board? When in trouble, do more research!
The poster needed a certain mystical feel to it, so having some random photos as a reference became really helpful.
The Pose: The sitting pose looking above offers the best potential. But it needs a setting.
Setting: The forest works for the play and having a dark mood will get closer to the mystical feeling thing I was told to create.
Corrections: Aside from some color correction and blending with the background, she needs to be lifted out of her body a bit. Also the color should be brought out to make her pop out of the poster, specially her purple skirt.
Headline: Now that we have the setting, we need to make room for the info. The white leaves work well as a transition in the bottom.
The headline needs to be prominent and this type face seems to fit the bill.
Finished Product:
And now for some final copy. A script type for the play quote, further adds to the mood of the poster, while the rest of the copy echos the headline.
We’re done.

I guess looking at the post title, I was under the impression, it would walk through the photoshop tutorial of how to design a poster. But, after reading the post, I walk away with how to conceptualize for poster design, from photo shoot to conceptualizing to final product. Nice work.
